Assistant Engineer

Description:

The Council has a requirement for Assistant Engineers across a range of disciplines. The Council’s work covers Transportation, Water Services, Housing, Environment & Climate Change and Recreation & Amenity.

Under the direction and supervision of the appropriate line manager, the post holder will provide engineering or ancillary services of an advisory, supervisory, or executive nature as may be required by the Council in the exercise and performance of any of its powers, functions and duties.

The Assistant Engineer will report directly to an Executive Engineer or Senior Executive Engineer, or such person as may be assigned from time to time by Galway City Council. The Assistant Engineer will work as part of a team within any one of the service areas outlined above.

The duties of an Assistant Engineer are to perform, under the discretion and supervision of the appropriate Supervisor, such engineering or ancillary services of an advisory, supervisory or executive nature, including the supervision and control of staff as may be required.

The principal duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Carry out the engineering or ancillary duties assigned to him/her.
• Supervise staff as required.
• Provide support to a more senior officer as required.
• Manage any budget allocated to him/her as effectively and efficiently as possible.
• Prepare work programmes as required.
• Prepare tender and contract documentation as required.
• Represent the Council at meetings with staff, elected members, community groups, businesses and residents.
• Propose improvements in the effectiveness and efficiency of existing practices/systems.
• Work with senior management in devising and implementing strategies for the more efficient delivery of service by support staff.
• Act when required for a more senior employee during his/her absence for any reason.
• Such other duties as may from time to time by reasonably assigned appropriate to the grade.
