The ideal candidate will create a safe, welcoming, and engaging classroom rooted in Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) principles—building strong relationships, establishing clear expectations, and fostering a culture of trust, respect, and student ownership. The classroom environment should reflect a commitment to positive connections, student voice, and a sense of belonging for every child.

This role places a strong emphasis on early literacy development, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The successful candidate will deliver structured, evidence-based literacy instruction while differentiating to meet the needs of all learners. In addition, the teacher will support early numeracy development and guide students in building independence, confidence, and a love of learning.

Collaboration with colleagues, families, and support staff is essential to ensure each child’s success academically, socially, and emotionally.

Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with proper endorsements (or ability to obtain)
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate elementary endorsement (or ability to obtain)
  • Early Childhood (ZA/ZS) endorsement preferred
  • Strong understanding of early literacy development and the Science of Reading
  • Effective classroom management grounded in positive behavior supports
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Experience & Key Responsibilities

  • Experience teaching in a kindergarten or early elementary setting
  • Successful teaching experience in instrumental music, including band instruction at multiple grade levels.
  • Demonstrated use of research-based early literacy instruction, including phonemic awareness, phonics, and guided reading practices
  • Ability to use data and formative assessments to drive literacy instruction and interventions
  • Implementation of CKH strategies such as daily greetings, social contracts, and relationship-building routines
  • Ability to create a structured, predictable classroom environment that promotes safety and student engagement
  • Strong focus on social-emotional learning, self-regulation, and student accountability
  • Experience differentiating instruction to meet a wide range of developmental and academic needs
  • Commitment to family engagement and consistent, positive communication with parents/guardians
