Description:
You will provide first aid and immediate temporary care to students, staff and visitors, and lead the day to day running of the school sick bay. You will work closely with school staff, parents and the school counsellor to support the wellbeing of every child in your care.
This role suits someone with strong first aid skills, organisation and admin skills, a calm and reassuring manner, and genuine enjoyment in working with children and young people.
Key Responsibilities
First aid and student care
- Provide first aid and immediate temporary care to students, staff and visitors across the school
- Assess injuries and illnesses calmly, deciding whether a student can return to class, needs to rest in sick bay, should be collected by a parent or guardian, or requires emergency care
- Support the management of sports injuries and other on site incidents
- Maintain a professional, reassuring manner at all times, including under pressure
Sick bay administration
- Organise the daily running of the sick bay and, including inducting and guiding new healthcare assistants or cover staff
- Work closely with the afternoon HCA so handovers between shifts are clear and consistent
- Organise the school's immunisation, hearing and vision screening programmes in partnership with the HSE
- Liaise with the facilities team on first aid kit maintenance and signage around the school
Health records and compliance
- Keep accurate, confidential records of sick bay visits, incidents and medication administered, using the school's management information system
- Complete accident report forms and notify the Board of Management or insurers where required
- Update student medical information and healthcare plans whenever new diagnoses or changes are reported
- Maintain records in line with school policy and GDPR requirements
Health promotion and family contact
- Develop and deliver health promotion initiatives for pupil groups and individuals
- Prepare individual healthcare plans in partnership with students, parents and staff
- Contact parents and guardians promptly when a student needs to go home
- Advise staff on pupils' medical needs, including on school trips and residential visits, and run familiarisation sessions such as managing allergic reactions
Essential
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Valid First Aid Response (FAR) certification from the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), or an equivalent recognised occupational first aid qualification
- Satisfactory National Vetting Bureau (Garda) clearance and completion of the Tusla Children First E-Learning programme before starting
- Strong first aid skills and evidence based practice when treating injured or unwell students
- Good working knowledge of MS Office and the ability to learn school management software quickly
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with staff, students and management at all levels
- A genuine appreciation of children's needs and a wish to play an active part in school life
