Power System Engineer

The Innovation and Planning office requires Engineers to undertake a variety of roles to meet 2030 targets. These include the development of onshore / offshore networks, power system operational tools and strategies, power market constructs to drive investment, power systems studies to facilitate connections and the development of the transmission network and techno-economics modelling.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out long term strategic analysis for onshore / offshore power system development, including customer connections and transmission reinforcements to 2050 and the evolution of power system operations, electricity markets and system adequacy.
  • Analyse industry and market trends and determine their potential impact on the organisation. Provide thought leadership and advocate industry best practices and principles in the context of long-term strategic power system planning.
  • Apply knowledge and experience in power system modelling and simulation using PSS/E, Plexos, DIgSILENT Powerfactory or DSA Tools with the ability to perform and coach others on planning studies such as thermal, voltage, transient stability, fault level, techno-economic etc.
  • Integrate new technologies and systems into the power system and market including new AC and HVDC infrastructure, synchronous compensators, battery energy storage systems, onshore and offshore renewable generation, large and flexible energy users, etc.
  • Engage and influence internal and external stakeholders to implement business process changes, incorporate planning methodologies and manage risk as required, to deliver a decarbonised, secure electricity future.

 

Requirements:

  • have an engineering degree & relevant experience
  • enjoy innovating and solving complex problems in a fast collaborative environment
  • understand the importance of innovation in the industry
  • possess an ambition to develop experience in power systems studies, development and integration of new technologies to the power system offshore wind technology, EU/UK energy policy framework, techno-economics modelling and electricity market design
  • bring experienced in performing power system analysis by using tools such as PSSE, PowerFactory, DSA tools, Matlab, Plexos
  • demonstrate the ability to develop and optimise tools such as Python and Tableau
  • showcase the ability to work well within a team with flexibility in approach, including a strong ability to work under own initiative
  • encompasse strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on high quality report writing and ability to communicate technical matters clearly and effectively.
