Senior Manager

Description:

Job Description

Lightstep enables teams to detect and resolve regressions quickly, regardless of system scale or complexity. We integrate seamlessly into daily workflows, whether you are proactively optimizing performance or investigating a root cause so you can quickly get back to building features. We continue to grow our talented, low-ego, team! We believe that we should always align our actions toward a common purpose, that trust is paramount and must be cultivated, that the most valuable team members multiply rather than add, and that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously (except when we’re writing way-too-long sentences about our values). We believe that assembling and retaining an inclusive and diverse team is the best way to grow a successful company.

We created Lightstep because we understand the massive architectural transformation underway in the software industry, and we saw an opportunity to accelerate it, all while improving the quality of the developer and end-user experience. While we learned a great deal from our experiences building Dapper (Google’s distributed tracing solution) and Monarch (Google’s high-availability metrics solution), Lightstep is in many ways a reaction to and a generational improvement beyond those approaches. Our story as individuals and as a company revolves around continuous learning, careful listening, and the belief that these fundamentally new software architectures require fundamentally new solutions.

Lightstep is a founding member of the OpenTelemetry project. OpenTelemetry is a collection of tools, APIs, and SDKs. Used to instrument, generate, collect, and export telemetry data (metrics, logs, and traces) to help you analyze your software’s performance and behavior.” We’re looking for a leader who is knowledgeable about popular open source technologies and best practices, eager to be an expert on distributed systems performance, and can lend a hand as a teacher, communicator, and organizer to help move the OpenTelemetry community forward.

What you get to do in this role:

The OSS Engineering Senior Manager role is for leaders who love working in open source projects, and are interested in product management, community management, and developer advocacy. In addition to managing and growing a team of Lightstep OSS engineers you are expected to show leadership by helping the broader community, championing issues, and shaping project roadmaps and strategies.

You’ll work inside the OpenTelemetry community to achieve the goal of creating a delightful experience for customers to instrument their systems and send telemetry data to Lightstep. You’ll be enabled to work toward leadership positions on projects that are vital to the success of OpenTelemetry and in line with Lightstep customers’ needs.

  • Contribute to the development of new advances in Open Source Telemetry Frameworks and Libraries.
  • Lead development on our public repositories and provide timely response to issues and pull requests.
  • Champion and advocate for OpenTelemetry both internally and externally.
  • Evangelize Observability and OpenTelemetry at conferences, meetups, and online through social media and other forums.
  • Plan and produce content supporting both Lightstep and the OpenTelemetry community such as blog posts, videos, tutorials, and other media.
  • Recruit and nurture new hires, contributors, and community advocates.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role you have:

  • You have experience leading and organizing work in Open Source communities
  • You are self-motivated and are great at prioritization, even when there’s “too much to do.”
  • Capable of engaging with other large OSS projects and championing their adoption
  • You’re capable of mediating conflict and managing external contributors
  • You are comfortable with a distributed work environment and can collaborate across time zones and cultures.
